design The new year is approaching — for homeowners and design enthusiasts, that means it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll revamp your interiors for 2017. There’s nothing like a new year to give you the feeling of a clean slate, and the opportunity to refresh some of your favorite spaces. To start you off, we’ve collected up the major 2017 design trend predictions. Allow this list to point your creativity in the right direction.

Get Inspired by Nature

Once the chill of winter subsides and the bright sunshine ushers in the feeling of spring, you’ll want to bring colors inspired by nature indoors. Pantone reported their top 10 color picks for spring 2017, and they’re all reminiscent of nature. From Primrose Yellow, mimicking the color of the sun, to a nice grassy color called Kale, to Flame and Pink Yarrow that give the bright pop you see from spring flowers; springtime 2017 is going to bring a warm, colorful vibe to your interiors. It’s not just natural colors that will be popular this year. Natural textures will also be making a powerful statement in homes and businesses across the globe. Lean more toward natural upholstered fabrics, wire brushing, and other natural textures this year.

Think Taupe

Earlier this year, Sherwin-Williams announced their color of the year as Poised Taupe. It’s the perfect middle-ground color to use as the backdrop to any room. Neither light nor dark, Poised Taupe has been described as looking “like gray and brown had a baby” — just right for the unimposing, goes-with-everything background color you’ve been searching for. In 2017, this color will take hold as a popular go-to neutral that takes versatility in a new direction. Plus, it should go well with the colors in Pantone’s spring lineup (hint, hint!).

Go Green — It’s In!

We’re not talking about the environment, here — green is an “in” color this year. Dark green hues will be making waves in 2017, to replace the dark blues you see in many interiors today. Whether used as a backdrop paint color in a room, or as a piece of accent furniture, you can’t really go wrong with green. It mimics colors found in nature and brings a peaceful, happy ambiance into any space.

Opt for Terracotta

Terracotta tiles will be making a comeback this year, to replace the white tones of today. Picture warmer-toned tiles with matte finishes, featured around fireplaces or in bathrooms. While this is a neutral color, it is by no means plain. With the chic matte finish, you’re going to love how much warmth this natural-colored tile brings to your interior.

Accent with Metals

This year, people are getting quite creative to make their interior designs stand out. One trend that you’ll see a lot is the use of mixed metals. While gold and brass are still a popular pick, silver and polished nickel will be making a comeback. You’ll also see a recent metal finish — white plaster — begin to make a name for itself. This year, don’t be afraid to explore fresh ways to mix these metals for an all-new look. But, maybe toss out the copper; that trend — along with rose gold — is on its way out. Summer 2017 will usher in polished metals, so don’t be afraid to use them as an accent to make a statement.

Go Vintage — And Modern

This year will introduce a trending focus on pieces that combine vintage and modern touches for an innovative look (think vintage furniture with modern textures). In 2017, you’ll see a lot of people recreating old-style pieces, especially mid-century-inspired furniture. Feel free to let your own creative side out with this one, to see where it leads you.

Repurpose Your Furniture

If vintage doesn’t intrigue you, that’s okay. Repurposed furniture of all sorts will remain popular in 2017, so if you haven’t already started a Pinterest board for your next repurposing project, now is the time to get on that! Feel free to get creative. From taking old rugs and using them as ottoman upholstery, to reusing old scraps of wood for new chairs, tables, and other furniture; the possibilities are practically endless (just like your Pinterest feed).

Choose Upholstered Headboards

Say goodbye to timber beds, and say hello to upholstered headboards. This year, luxury is in — and upholstered headboards have long been a sign of luxurious living. They’ll come in many forms, from plush velvet headboards to classic upholstered headboards with buttons. Maybe combine this project with the one above, using recycled materials to craft your own upholstered headboard!

Design a Space for Reading

In today’s fast-paced society, people are very drawn to having a space that’s great for kicking back, relaxing, and getting lost in a good book. Find a corner of your home that’s not used often, or is in need of a new state of mind. Redesign it with comfort and quality lighting in mind, and turn it into a peaceful space for unplugging and unwinding.

Don’t Be Afraid of Wallpaper

Though wallpaper may seem like a thing of the past, you’ll find it serving as a backdrop in many rooms this year. But not just any wallpaper will do in 2017. This year will highlight art-inspired wallpaper; think more like landscapes or large floral patterns, rather than the wallpaper you might remember of days gone by. If you want something truly unique, don’t be afraid to talk to local artists about turning their art into a new, beautiful wallpaper.

Ditch the Marble

The marble trend has come and gone, so avoid planning any projects that involve marble countertops or floor tiles. Instead, opt for more natural materials with earthy textures. Think wicker, clay, and wood instead.

Look For Fresh Artwork

As far as wall décor goes, interior designers will be looking for something new to fill those blank spaces this year. “Keep Calm” posters and quote artworks have become so overdone that they’re now a cliché. Keep an eye out for fresh looks and new artists that can bring a pop of color to your space, without crossing into the “cliché” category.

Don’t Worry About Accent Walls

Another trend on its way out is that of accent walls. Forget about them this year, especially if you’re thinking about accenting with chevron patterns; we’re saying goodbye to both. Instead, leave the accenting up to the other pieces in the room. Feel free to accent your space with jeweled tones, mod geo designs, or (of course) green fabrics.
